Welcome to this online course on Academic English! One key skill for all students at Metropolia is the skill of academic writing. During your studies you have probably already written reports and in order to graduate you will be writing a Bachelor's thesis.  The objective of this course is to provide you with the means to produce both reports and a thesis according to Metropolia guidelines and in accordance with general academic writing practices. 

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • apply the conventions of technical and academic English writing style in his or her own texts, considering different language registers
  • plan, structure and write different project reports and academic papers
  • include and refer to tables, figures, mathematical expressions and other data appropriately in reports and oral presentations
  • prepare and deliver professional presentations of the different stages of a project and of its outcomes
  • acquire information for academic and project-related purposes from relevant English source material
  • critically evaluate and compare source information and incorporate it into your own texts
  • paraphrase, document and reference source material in reports and presentations appropriately
