Please check with your lecturer / thesis supervisor with regard to how you can or cannot use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT for your course assignment(s)/thesis. Some assignments will not permit the use of AI tools, while others may allow AI with some limitations. If the lecturer allows the use of AI tools, check with them how and where you can place an acknowledgement of this in your assignment. If no guidance is given, you could place the acknowledgement between the title and the first paragraph (introduction) of your assignment.
For example:
At the start of the assignment before the Introduction:
Whilst the content of this essay is my own and I take responsibility for all errors, ChatGPT was used in the planning stages to create the initial structure.
In other cases, it may be more appropriate to include an acknowledgement of your use of generative AI tools as you would when writing a “methods” section of a research paper:
Initial text for this report was provided using ChatGPT. (6 April 2023). Prompt: “What does a company need to do to engage customers?”.
The first draft of the introduction to this report was generated by Microsoft Word Editor Summary tool. (10 April 2023).
Another alternative would be to include in the appendix a full transcript of any prompts and AI-generated responses. Use common sense.
Using Generative AI tools to provide references or citations
There are no specific guidelines yet for citing ChatGPT or other generative AI tools in Harvard style. Please note that this is only interim advice (June 2023) and is subject to change as Metropolia develops official policies on this.
If you ask Generative AI tools to provide references or citations, you run the risk of these being created based simply on what would look like a valid reference. Furthermore, if you ask an AI tool to provide a list of references, the list it provides may not be real. Besides, generative AI tools like ChatGPT cannot accurately cite their own sources. Any references they provide may be false or non-existent. You should always check the original source for any references that are generated.
