Travelling outside your country may require, apart from other things, immunisation against some infectious diseases. It is very important for the travellers to seek for proper advice before departure and check if their immunisation status is up-to-date in order to stay safe and healthy during and after the trip.
Pretravel consultation
All travellers should visit a travel medicine office before the journey in order to receive consultation about vaccination and potential health risks.
When consulting a traveller on vaccinations, the vaccinator needs to take a good health history and ask details on the trip in order to provide proper vaccination consultation. These include:
Personal data & trip details. Τravel destination, the area where the traveler will stay, the accommodation and the activities the traveler will take part will consult the travelers for vaccinations.
Health history. We need to know if there is a current infection or any chronic disease taking also medication, so that we consult accordingly the traveler. Allergies should be known so that we will proceed with vaccinations or not.
Vaccinations history. Travellers need to be vaccinated with all routine vaccines before their trip despite the travel vaccines they may need.
Ethics. The vaccinator should be aware of current travel health guidelines provide up-to-date information to the travellers and inform about the potential side effects. Thus, it is important to obtain an informed consent which in some countries may be required to be in written form (Leggat, 2006).
Leggat, P. A. (2006) Risk assessment in travel medicine. Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease, 4, 127–134.
Vaccines protect travellers from getting diseases when visiting other countries. The risk of travel-related illness varies depending on destination and traveller characteristics. Thus, travellers should seek health advice or visit a travel health clinic at least 4-8 weeks before departure.
What vaccines are required before travelling? Review routine vaccinations and those required or recommended according to the destination country.
In this section, you can find information about the vaccinations for travellers that in most countries are not included in their national vaccination programmes. For example, Yellow Fever, Cholera, Rabies, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis, Tick-Borne Encephalitis. However, we need to remember that the travellers should be up to date on routine vaccinations while travelling to any destination. It is a good opportunity to review the immunization status of the traveller. To study more about routine vaccines, please see the section "Vaccination basics".
