Compiling your references as you work
It is much easier to compile your reference list as you work on your assignment rather than waiting until the end of the writing process. By collecting and saving a full list of all references you are using as you research and write your work, you can reduce confusion about a particular source you have used in the text. This will also reduce the need for you to re-loan library books in case one of your sources has been returned to the library before being placed in the final reference list. You should also save screenshots or print out websites you use.
When beginning your research, it is wise to begin collecting the following information about the sources where each point is applicable:
- Author(s), editor(s)
- Year of publication
- Title
- Edition (if not first edition)
- Place of publication
- Publisher
- Editor of the publication
- Name of the publication
- Pages on which the article is found
- Volume number
- Periodical number
- Name, place and date of the conference
- Address of an Internet source and the date it was updated and/or accessed
Using MetCat Finna
In MetCat Finna, a web service provided by Metropolia library, you can save reference information onto your account by clicking on the pin icon (Save to list).

You can also use “Cite this” to generate a list of citations.

You should then select Harvard style but check for accuracy e.g., with punctuation before including the reference in your work.
Using other tools
You may also come across a number of free apps, reference manager programs and websites which can help, but use common sense with these as they are not all 100% reliable. You will have to format the reference list that the app or program automatically makes for you using the instructions in this guidebook. For example, the results in the Refworks app below do not follow the exact punctuation and style of the Harvard system as used by Metropolia Business School.
