1 Why do we use references?

In academic writing, it is essential to cite or acknowledge your sources (Cottrell, 2013: 179). You need to show the sources of your ideas and information in your work. Any opinions or generalisations you use in your text need factual detail (evidence) to support them. You also need to support your argument or any claims you make with evidence. The citations or references in your text (also called in-text citations) allow your readers to check these for themselves using your reference list at the end of your work.
