3 Compiling a Reference List
Section outline
-
The reference list is a detailed description of each source at the end of your thesis. It should contain all the information necessary to allow any reader to locate any in-text reference you have used in your text. Only sources referred to in the text are included in the reference list.
The section is headed with the word References, there is no need to give it a different title or section number. Page numbering continues with the References section.
In brief, some rules for your reference list:
- Write the reference list in alphabetical order of author’s surname.
- Use initial only for first name.
- Date - is not in brackets. (Or standardise)
- Use italics for book/journal/newspaper/magazine titles.
- Remove hyperlinks (underline) from URLs.
- Place URLs in < >
- Indicate [online] or [pdf] or [ebook] sources.
- Give date you last accessed the online source in [ ]
- Check all punctuation carefully!
- Finish the reference entry with a full stop.
- Single line space the reference entry.
- Leave a line break between references.
