• 4. Textile Structures and Processing - Progression

The 4th theme offers the student abilities to

    - identify different materials and integration techniques to obtain a given functionality.
    - know woven fabrics and techniques with two or more warp systems: jacquard structures, spacer fabrics, 3D structures, terry fabrics (towelling), Leno weaving, velvet/ pile structures and  carpets
    - know warp knitting manufacturing concept.
    - know weft knitting methods: fully fashioned and seamless.
    - identify resource-efficient textile finishing processes.
    - identify and understand the principles of various resource-efficient processes for (digital) printing, and finishing i.e. supercritical CO2, plasma, corona, spray Dyeing, UV & IR curing/coating.

The theme is divided into 5 different learning units:

After completing the course, the student is able to

4.1 Technical and smart textiles - 1 ECTS

The course aims to give the student ability to describe the area of application of technical textiles in relation to requirements and quality aspects; describe the concept and the components of the a smart system, various types of materials and integration techniques used to obtain a given functionality. - Recommended contents of the learning material available

4.2 Advanced theory of weaving - 1 ECTS

The course aims to give the student ability to describe the concept of various weaving techniques with two or more warp systems (jacquard, leno, spacers, 3D) used to obtain complex woven structures; describe the main parts of these machines and understand how the systems work; describe the manufacturing methods for complex woven structures; name the related pattern design software. - Recommended contents of the learning material available

    4.3 Advanced Knitting Technologies  - 1 ECTS

The course aims to give the student understanding of the concept of warp knit manufacturing and the properties and manufacturing methods of seamless and fully fashioned knits. It also shows the connection between the manufacturing method and product longevity and offers understanding how the manufacturing method influences the amount of production waste - Tested learning material available

4.4 Resource-efficient textile processes for dying, printing and finishing  - 1 ECTS

The course aims to give the student ability to identify and understand the principles and advantages of various resource-efficient processes for dyeing, printing, finishing including digital printing, supercritical CO2, plasma, corona, spray dyeing, UV & IR curing coating. - Recommended contents of the learning material available

4.5 Quality control of fabrics, technical and smart textiles - 1 ECTS

The course aims to give the student ability to summarise basic and  application-specific quality control ISO/ EN/ ASTM/ AAATC tests related to woven and knitted fabrics and technical and smart textiles respectively. - Recommended contents of the learning material available
