• 5. Circular Economy in Textile and Clothing - Basics

    The 5th theme offers the student abilities to know and identify:

    • the basic terms related to sustainability.
    • the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals.
    • the principles of circular economy.
    • various circular design strategies considering the entire product lifecycle and supply chain.
    • the regulation of the registration, evaluation,
    • authorisation and restriction of chemicals (REACH).

    The 5th theme is divided into 7 different learning units:

    5.1 Aspects of sustainability in textile and clothing sector - 1 ECTS

    The course aims to give the student knowledge and understanding of the basic terms related to sustainability/sustainable development and describe its different dimensions (environmental, economic, social and cultural); recognise the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and understand their connection to the textile and clothing industry.- Tested learning material available

    5.2 Principles of circular economy - 1 ECTS

    The course aims to give the student abilities to describe what circular economy is about and how it connects to sustainable development; understand the central principles of circular economy; name and describe the circular cycles. - Tested learning material available

    5.3 Introduction of circular business strategies in textile and clothing sector - 1 ECTS

    The course aims to give the student knowledge and understanding of the term of circular business strategy and how it relates to different circular cycles. - Tested learning material available

    5.4 Sustainable (or circular?) design principles - 1 ECTS

    The course aims to give the student understanding of the role of (product) design in the circular economy; name various circular design strategies/approaches considering the entire product lifecycle and textile supply chain. - Recommended contents of the learning material available

    5.5 Textile product health and safety regulations - 1 ECTS

    The course aims to give the student abilities to understand the Regulation of the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals (REACH),  knowledge of the basics of the safety of textile products, current EU legislation related to textiles and clothing, ability to interpret and associate aspects of main EU law to protect human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals and to identify and provide examples of product safety regulations from various fields including the textile and clothing sector. - Tested learning material available

    5.6 Labels and certifications in textile and clothing sector - 1 ECTS
    The course aims to give the student knowledge about how sustainability certifications ensure that the production and supply chain practices of a company meet established environmental and social standards. - Recommended contents of the learning material available

    5.7 Introduction of life cycle assessment tools - 1 ECTS

    The course aims to give the student abilities to explain the principles and necessity of life cycle assessment and to describe the different stages of life cycle assessment, while understanding the importance of a holistic approach. The student is after able to use the life cycle assessment tool OpenLCA at the initial level. - Tested learning material available
